Can Spiders Damage My Lawn?

Can spiders damage my lawn and how can I get rid of them?

Not all spiders do not damage your lawn. They can actually help with eliminating other lawn insects, however too many spider webs can make your lawn look untreated. Grass Spiders for example are usually found in the grass and make funnel shaped webs. They are brown with stripes and can grow about 1 inch. The other downside is that spiders do bite people. While some aren’t venomous, some spiders are but no one ever wants to get bit by a spider. There are some spiders that could cause damage to your lawn by digging holes. Wolf spiders and trapdoor spiders spend a lot of time in the ground and use those holes to capture their prey.

There are reasons why spiders may be visiting your lawn, one being leaving your lights on at night, bright lights show flying insects which attract spiders. Soon as the spiders see those flying insects it’s showing them where their dinner is and will make themselves comfortable on your property. Some spiders also lay eggs in the soil because the soil is moist, inactive and climatically stable which protects the eggs from drying out.

There are a few ways to make sure no spiders are on your property, one being to make sure your lawn is clean of food and beverage crumbs and remains. The crumbs will attract bugs like ants and they attract spiders. This also includes pet food if you feed your pets or neighborhood animals outside. Another way is to wash your dishes, dish soap discourages bugs from coming into the house, especially during the summer, if you don’t wash your dishes and they are left out in your sink it’s a welcoming to bugs which attracts the spiders. Mowing your lawn is another way to keep the spiders away as it discourages the spiders from building their webs and makes it more difficult to build their home in your lawn. If there is a severe spider infestation, contact your local pest control team and they will know how to take care of the spiders and identify what kind it is if needed.
