Fertilizer is one of the key ingredients to a healthy, well fed lawn. It promotes grass growth which will help your lawn appear more green and thick. After a hot summer or cold winter it is important to make sure you are fertilizing to protect the lawn from extreme weather conditions. You’ll want to fertilize a few times throughout the year to have your lawn looking nice, but the best times are in the spring and fall (once the soil temp reaches around 55 degrees Fahrenheit and above, and when they go below 50 degrees Fahrenheit). In the spring, it is ideal to do your first round of fertilizer being that the grass is just starting to grow and needs the nutrients. Some people only fertilize once a year, and if that is the case for you, fall is the absolute best time to do it because it will protect your lawn from the cold weather and possibly help fix any heat damage caused by the hot summer.
The best fertilizer for green grass is one that is nitrogen rich. Nitrogen is critical, not only when it comes to the growth and reproduction of grass, but weeds too! Many weeds do not like nitrogen in the soil so you will benefit from having a regular, nitrogen-rich fertilizer program. To figure out what kind of fertilizer you need, you can take a soil sample and research the right products for your grass type.
